Servite football tops St. Paul with a series of big plays on offense – Orange County Register

SANTA FE SPRINGS – He’s not an option quarterback, but Servite’s Leo Hannan understood his options well Friday night.

He threw two touchdown passes, both times throwing to safety valve receivers, as Servite defeated St. Paul 34-13 in the Friars’ final nonleague tuneup.

Servite had nothing but frustration on its first two possessions. The Friars had second-and-goal from the 2-yard-line while trailing 3-0, but a bad snap led to a missed 40-yard field goal attempt.

On Servite’s next possession, St. Paul recovered Hannan’s fumble at its 20.

“It’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about, just staying consistent,” Hannan said. “Just keeping guys encouraged on the sidelines, making sure their heads were in the right spot.”

They were in the right spot. The Friars (4-1) set up at their own 49 after forcing a short punt from the Swordsmen. On first down,Hannan avoided St. Paul’s pressure then, with no other options, flipped a pass to Quaid Carr in the right flat. Carr did the rest, turning the swing pass into a 51-yard touchdown.

“Explosive plays on offense were a big thing for us tonight,” Servite coach Chris Reinert said. “We made a lot of big plays out on the perimeter.”

A 46-yard pass to Carr led to Hannan’s 2-yard TD run with 4:48 in the first half, then Gabrielle Gutierrez added the first of his two rushing TDs, an 8-yarder, with 1:32 left in the half for a 20-3 lead.

St. Paul drew to within 20-10 in the third quarter, but Gutierrez helped steady the ship with his 12-yard touchdown, and a 27-13 lead, with 8:50 left in the game.

Two more explosions from Devan Parker sealed the victory. He went 50 yards on a double reverse to the St. Paul 29. The Friars found themselves faced with fourth-and-19 from the 24 when Parker struck again. He took a short pass from Hannan and looked like a pinball machine, bouncing off tacklers before rolling into the end zone for a 24-yard TD with 4:15 left.

“That’s just like backyard football,” Hannan said. “We work on that in practice, scramble drill on that play. Devan Parker made an amazing play, O-line finished pushing them forward. That was just a great team play right there.”
